Jeanne of Naples, Countess of Provence, known as "Queen Jeanne", sold the town of Avignon to Clement VI, who cleared her of all suspicion when accused of the assassination of her first husband. At the time of the great schism, she in turn supported the Pope of Avignon against Urban VI.
