Description

Located in Ribera de Duero is one of the most exciting Spanish wineries - VIVALTUS.

It is a project of Rioja winemakers. Ramón Martínez, Jesús Yllera and José Yllera; three men with a long family wine tradition who came together in the 80s to share a challenge, with the spirit of doing something different and better in the Rueda area. The Yllera; descendants of a long family tradition dedicated to wine. Ramón Martínez; grandson of the founder of the Riojan Bodegas Berberana.

In 2010 they were joined by Jean-Claude Berrouet, widely considered by many to be the best winemaker in the world ( he is credited with taking Chateau Pavie from a 2nd growth to 1st growth Grand Cru).

The vineyards of VIVALTUS are at an altitude of 800-1000m, the vines are 80-100 years old and the soils are red clay with granite.

La Fleur Vivaltus, the 2nd wine of the estate,  is 97% Tempranillo with 3% Cabernet & Merlot. Aged 1 year in barrel and another 7mths in bottle, the wines have great natural acidity and enormous elegance.

Tasting Notes

Grape Blend: 97% Tempranillo with 3% Cabernet & Merlot.

I tasted the bottled version of the 2016 La Fleur de Vivaltus on a warm summer Monday morning in 2018. It's mostly Tempranillo with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and has 13.9% alcohol. It is fermented with neutral yeasts followed by an élevage that lasted 12 months in 70% used barrels, 20% new ones and 10% in concrete eggs. This shows very good freshness and elegance, a style I have also seen in some of the Yllera wines from this vintage , floral, perfumed and elegant, with a vibrant palate with very good freshness and clean, focused flavors.
