Description

Domaine de Chevalier is a legendary Grand Cru Classé estate located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux and is renowned for producing both exceptional red and world-class white wines.  The winery's 67 hectares of vineyards are completely enclosed in a singular, vast block surrounded by a protective forest. This unique microclimate insulates the vines from temperature extremes and encourages rich biodiversity.

The estate’s history stretches back to the 17th century when it was known as "Chivaley" (meaning "knight" in old Gascon). In 1983, the estate was purchased by the Bernard family, prominent Bordeaux négociants and spirits traders. A 23-year-old Olivier Bernard was placed at the helm. Over the course of four decades, Olivier transformed the property through meticulous vineyard mapping, expanding production, building state-of-the-art modern vat rooms, and perfecting a style focused on refinement over raw power. Today, his sons Adrien and Hugo continue to drive the estate's pursuit of elegance and sustainability

Tasting Notes

The 2020 Domaine de Chevalier is a touch more tightly wound than the brilliant 2019 out of the gates, but it seems likely to equal that vintage with a bit of time. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of minty blackberries and cassis mingled with notions of burning embers, spices, rose petals and orange rind, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit, powdery structuring tannins and a long, saline finish. As I wrote last year, this estate in recent vintages has arrived at a sort of stylistic contemporary classicism that evokes the great wines of yesteryear from this address, and the 2020 continues that trend.
Robert Parker Wine Advocate 95+ Pts

The 2020 Domaine de Chevalier has a refined and understated nose, well-defined with blackberry, briar, gravel and earth. Sensual in style, it gradually unfurls in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins and a little creaminess toward the back end, but there is still decent structure here. Give this four to five years in bottle—the class shines through.
